Event: The Nick Ross Orchestra - The Glenn Miller and Rat Pack Era - 7.30pm - Many years before the Beatles stepped onto the world’s most famous zebra crossing, Glenn Miller made his last known recording at London’s Abbey Road Studios on Monday 27th November 1944, just a few short weeks before he “disappeared” on December 15th of that same year. The lights soften, the mood settles. An audience waits for that first moment of sound. The Big Band is poised, relaxed, but with eyes anxious for the lead. And then, as if giving body to an echo, the murmured notes of ‘Moonlight Serenade’… and the night, it seems, is suddenly full and timeless. There are those who watch and listen who tap a shy finger to the melodies, others who follow with a silent foot-beat, still others who murmur softly through the lyrics, and those who simply permit a fleeting smile. But common to all are memories. Recapture the sounds of a bygone era as the Nick Ross Orchestra presents ‘an unmissable evening of music and song’ – the Classic Big Band Sound of the 1940s & 50s.

Event: Andover Chamber Choir - The Journey to Easter - 7.30pm - This year’s spring concert from Andover Chamber Choir charts the dramatic events leading up to Easter in words and music.Entitled ‘The Journey to Easter’, the story begins in Lent with its emphasis on preparation and penitence, moving on to Palm Sunday and Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The next stage on the journey is Maundy Thursday with the Last Supper and soul-searching in the Garden of Gethsemane.The central events of Good Friday give way to the initially restrained celebration of the Resurrection on the Vigil of Easter and then to joyful Easter Day itself, all with music tailored to the days in question. Conductor Bruce Randall says, “There is so much great music written for Lent and Holy Week which is rarely heard these days. The music we’re perforing ranges from Tallis, Palestrina and Victoria in the 16th century to Purcell in the 17th, Gounod, Schubert, Tchaikovsky and Wesley in the 19th and Duruflé, Chilcott and Gjeilo in more recent times." Proceeds will go to the Andover Young Carers, a small charity providing vital support and respite to young carers in Andover and the surrounding area who have caring responsibilities that are inappropriate for their years.
